I was inspired by a piece on critical thinking I read on Edutopia. It was entitled Jump-Start Critical Thinking With an Aphorism.
Here was a Spanish teacher working with students on figurative language. He was getting them to think outside of the literal: analytically, critically, creatively. I realized - as he did - that his method could apply to any subject.
By getting his students to put their thinking into written words, and then share, he was elevating student thinking by an order of magnitude.
